Excellent essay. I agree – when I first saw Star Wars, I couldn’t believe what a capable, non-traditional princess Leia was. I loved that she wasn’t the typical helpless female in a sci-fi flick. Her influence has spanned decades.

So true. I think we owe a debt of gratitude to the late great Carrie Fisher for helping to shape Leia’s character. As many have noted, the sheer force of her personality not only contributed to Leia’s non-traditional onscreen portrayal but also to the longevity of the character’s cultural influence. 🙂
You may have seen Dan Aykroyd’s funny and sweet tribute to Carrie Fisher:
“Contemplating marriage, I gave Carrie a sapphire ring and subsequently in the romance she gave me a Donald Roller Wilson oil painting of a monkey in a blue dress next to a tiny floating pencil, which I kept for years until it began to frighten my children.”
