Martin McDonagh wrote ‘Three Billboards‘ while travelling between New York and LA via Santa Fe and Montana. “I write by hand on notepads,” he muses, “And at the top of each page I write whichever country or state I’m in. This script was like a road map of America. – Rhiana Davies-Cotter and James Mottram, FilmInk. More:
Martin McDonagh is an Irish-Brit writer/director, born in South London. I loved his film ‘In Bruges’ (2008), where the beautiful Gothic city of Bruges stands in as an additional character, growing darker and taking on elements of Hieronymus Bosch paintings as the story progresses. The good people of Bruges who were so accommodating of the film shoot may have had second thoughts after seeing how sad, strange and dangerous their fairy tale Belgian city was ultimately portrayed. McDonagh’s Irish humor can be very dark indeed.

Interesting read. I wish I had felt “Three Billboards” was uniquely American. To me it felt like it was from another planet.
