As a woman, it’s powerful to see narratives where women are allowed to own heroic space… Isak Dinesen said that the “real glory of dreams lies in their atmosphere of unlimited freedom.” Imagine what would happen if women could claim more of this unlimited freedom? – Megan Mayhew Bergman, The Paris Review. What a great comment! Public dialogue on this topic is so necessary. Many, even in the film industry, remain unaware this is still a live issue. Loved your review of Their Finest. Directors, especially female, are answerable to their funding sources, the business end of production: Producers and Distributors. But I do love the ‘movie within a movie’ genre, and at least the narrative shines a light on an ongoing lack of the female voices ‘below the line’. Thanks for stopping by. 🙂

I like the phrase “it’s powerful to see narratives where women are allowed to own heroic space”, a sentiment that is not the exclusive domain of women. Even well-intentioned films like Their Finest, directed by a woman, can end up being celebrations of male heroics to the exclusion of women’s achievements. There are not many male directors who have the bi-lateral gender sensitivities to grant the ownership of heroic space to women. Great post.
